Dr. Birnie was born in Zambia and grew up in South Africa, where
after representing his province (state) in rugby, he
concentrated on his medical studies and graduated as an
orthopaedic surgeon in 1986. He worked in England and Canada
after completing a one year fellowship in hand and upper
extremity surgery at the Indiana
Hand Center in Indianapolis in
1989/1990. He became the Consultant-in-charge of the hand and
upper extremity unit at a 2,000 bed teaching hospital in Cape
Town, South Africa.
In 1992 he joined the faculty of the University of
Chicago specializing in surgery and reconstruction of the hand and upper
extremity, including the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Dr. Birnie is a full time clinician, also responsible for
educating medical students and residents in the art and science
of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Chicago. He brings
an extraordinary wealth of experience and knowledge to the
orthopaedic faculty at The University of Chicago. He is a
certified rugby coach and Faculty Advisor to the University of
Chicago Rugby Foot Club.
