Dr. Tong-Chuan He received his M.D. and M.S. degree in Biochemistry from Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.  Dr. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. Dr. He pursued his postdoctoral training under the guidance of two internationally renowned scientists Drs. Bert Vogelstein and Kenneth Kinzler at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Johns Hopkins Medical Institution, Baltimore, MD. During his tenure, Dr. He made significant contributions in two areas.  First, he developed an innovative technology for generating recombinant adenoviral vectors for gene delivery (He et al. PNAS 95:2509-2514). This patented technology is now being used by more than 3,000 research laboratories throughout the world. Second, Dr. He was the first to identify the molecular targets that may function as the critical mediators of the oncogenic activity of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in human cancers (He et al. Science 281:1509-1512; and He et al. Cell 99:335-345). These fundamental findings have been cited nearly 4,000 times since their publications.

The long-term objective of his research at The University of Chicago is two-fold: 1) to understand the molecular bases of bone and musculoskeletal diseases, especially bone and soft tissue tumors; and 2) to develop innovative therapeutic and/or preventive strategies for these disorders by translating basic findings from bench work into applications in pre-clinical and/or clinical settings.

In addition to his primary appointment, Dr. He serves on the Institutional Biosafety Committee of The University of Chicago.
