Section Chief Dr. Michael
Simon, MD has been elected the President-Elect of the
American Orthopaedic Association, and continues to serve
as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Residency Review
Committee of the Accreditation Council on Graduate
Medical Education.

Faculty member Daniel Mass, MD
was elected President of The University of Chicago
Medical Alumni Association.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD received a total of $200,000 research support from the
Otho S.A. Sprague Memorial Institute, the Concern
Foundation, and the American Cancer Society-Illinois
Division for his investigation on human osteosarcoma
development.

Faculty member John Martell,
MD received the John Charnley Award given by the
Hip Society.

The Section has recruited three
new faculty members, Purnendu Gupta, MD, Tong-Chuan
(T.-C.) He, MD, PhD, and Craig Phillips, MD. Dr.
Gupta was a faculty member of Ohio State University for four
years following a spine fellowship at Washington University St.
Louis. Dr. Gupta will establish an orthopaedic spine service at
The University of Chicago Hospitals in Hyde Park and at
Matteson. Dr. He finished his postdoctoral training at the
Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Johns Hopkins Oncology
Center under the guidance of two internationally renowned
scientists Drs. Bert Vogelstein and Ken Kinzler. During his
postdoctoral training, Dr. He worked on cancer gene therapy and
the Wnt signaling in tumorigenesis, which resulted in several
high impact publications in Science, Cell, and PNAS. Dr. He
will direct the Molecular Oncology Laboratory, which
focuses on bone and soft tissue sarcoma research, as well as on
orthopaedic biology. Dr. Phillips was a resident at The
University of Chicago and finished his fellowship at the Curtis
National Hand Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Phillips
will establish a hand and upper extremity practice at our
northside facility, Weiss Hospital.

Resident Rex C. Haydon, MD,
PhD won the
Howard Schneider Award for Best Manuscript at the OREF Midwest Conference.

Resident David Manning, MD
received a competitive OREF Resident Research Award.
Resident Tom McNally, MD won the AOA-Zimmer Resident
Research Award.

Faculty member Louis F.
Draganich, PhD received the American Society of
Biomechanics Clinical Research Award in July 2000.

Henry A. Finn, MD, the Finn Knee™ (a rotating hinge) and
Balanced Hip™ (a cementless fixation of the femur) continue to
evolve and have been used in many of the top joint replacement
centers worldwide. Dr. Finn was also appointed to the Editorial Board of the
Journal of Arthroplasty, the
largest journal solely devoted to joint replacement.

Lawrence Pottenger, MD and Louis Draganich, PhD, TRAC™
total knee has received worldwide attention. In addition, Drs.
Pottenger and Draganich have designed a cruciate retaining TRAC™
knee prosthesis.
