Section Chief Dr. Michael
Simon, MD has been elected to the Board of Trustees
of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS).

The University of Chicago Orthopaedic Surgery was ranked
number 10 in the
country by the US News and World Report.

The Section’s Orthopaedic
Surgery Residency Program has been awarded a full five-year
renewal of the accreditation by the Residency Review Committee.
The Section also has four accredited Fellowship Programs:
Adult Reconstructive Surgery, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery,
Orthopaedic Oncology, and Sports Medicine.

Faculty member Terrance
Peabody, MD has been elected as a member of the prestigious
American Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Faculty member Daniel Mass, MD
has been appointed as Co-Chairman of The University of
Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine 75th Anniversary
Celebration. Dr. Mass also served as Secretary of The
University of Chicago Hospitals Medical Staff Organization.

Faculty member Bruce Reider,
MD has been chosen as Editor of the American
Journal of Sports Medicine, the official journal of the
American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Dr.
Reider is also a member of the Board of Directors of the AOSSM.

Faculty member Brian Toolan,
MD has been appointed as Chairman of the Outcomes
Committee of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society
(AOFAS) for a two-year term.

Faculty member Sherwin Ho, MD
has been elected to the Board of Councilors of the AAOS for a three-year term. In this role, Dr. Ho attended
the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference in Washington,
D.C., where he had an opportunity to visit the Capital Hill and
lobby the Congress on behalf of AAOS.

Faulty member Bruce Reider, MD
has been elected as Secretary of the Herodicus Society.
Dr. Reider also signed a contract for the second edition of his
textbook “The Orthopaedic Physical Examination”.

Faculty member Henry Finn, MD
was named Chief of the Section of Orthopaedics at Weiss
Hospital. His Finn Knee system continued to evolve for
increased versatility. Dr. Finn also obtained FDA approval
for a non-linked superstabilized knee (SSK) prothesis in younger
patients. This system will be available in 2004 as a part of the
new Maxim system by Biomet, Inc.

Faculty member Christopher
Sullivan, MD spoke at the course “Pediatric Orthopaedics for
the Primary Care Practitioners”, sponsored by the Valley
Children’s Hospital and the University of California at San
Francisco.

Faculty member Purnendu Gupta,
MD was named to the Editorial Board of Spine,
the official journal of NASS.

Faculty member Roderick Birnie,
MD taught in The University of Chicago Primary Care
Orthopaedics and Combined Chicago Hand and Upper Extremity
Courses. Dr. Birnie also coaches The University of Chicago
Men’s Rugby Football Club.

Faculty member Sherwin Ho, MD
organized the Primary Care Orthopaedics CME Course for its ninth
year, which attracts over 200 physicians each year.

Faculty members Bruce Reider,
MD and Louis Draganich, PhD received an unrestricted
grant from Don Joy Orthopaedics to study the efficacy of
adjustable valgus knee braces in the treatment of
osteoarthritis.

Faculty member Holly Benjamin,
MD successfully organized the CME course “Current
Concepts in Sports Medicine”. Dr. Benjamin is also
active as medical team physician and provides coverage for local
sporting events, such as the Chicago Marathon.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD has been selected as a recipient of the Overseas
Chinese Young Investigator Collaboration Award from the
Natural Science Foundation of China. This three-year award
is highly competitive and usually given to the outstanding
overseas Chinese investigators, who will conduct collaborative
research with Co-Investigators in China.

Resident Hue H. Luu, MD
has been awarded with the OREF Resident Research Grant.
This one-year $15,000 award will support Dr. Luu’s research
project on osteosarcoma metastasis. Faculty member
T.-C.
He, MD, PhD is the research mentor on this project.

Orthopaedic resident Ronjon
Paul, MD presented his research findings at the Annual
OREF Midwest Resident Research Symposium and won the First Place Prize.

Resident Rex C. Haydon, MD,
PhD won The Best Poster Award at the Ninth Charles
Huggins Research Symposium at The University of Chicago.

Resident Hue H. Luu, MD
received the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation
Journal Club Award.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD, PhD received $75,000 research
support from The Brinson Foundation to investigate the
pathogenesis of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. . Faculty
members Dr. Michael A. Simon, MD and Terrance Peabody,
MD were Co-Investigators on this grant.
