Simon, MD has been named Associate Dean of Graduate
Medical Education at The University of Chicago in September,
2003.

Faculty member Terrance
Peabody, MD serves as a Site Visitor for the ACGME.
Dr. Peabody also is the representative of the AOA to the
National Program Directors Association.

Faculty member Rex C. Haydon,
MD, PhD has been selected as a recipient of the 2003 OREF
Career Development Award, which provides an annual support
of $75,000 for three years. Dr. Haydon’s research project is
entitled “Dlx genes in BMP-6 mediated osteogenesis”. Faculty
member T.-C. He, MD, PhD will serve as the collaborator
on this project.

Faculty member Terrance
Peabody, MD chaired the Annual Meeting of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MTS), which was held in
Chicago this year.

Faculty member Daniel Mass, MD
was re-elected as Secretary of The University of Chicago
Hospitals Medical Staff Organization. Dr. Mass was also on the
faculty at the DePuy Total Elbow Seminar.

Faculty member John Martell,
MD becomes known internationally as resources for the design
and implementation of polyethylene wear studies. Dr. Martell
also co-chaired the ASTM Symposium in Miami, FL.

Faculty member Bruce Reider,
MD was invited to participate in and to chair the
instructional course “Reading the literature to change your
clinical practice”, at the Annual Meeting of the American
Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).

Faculty member Purnendu Gupta,
MD was appointed to the Scientific Program Committee of the
Scoliosis Research Society. Dr. Gupta was an invited
lecturer at the course “Essentials in Spine Care” organized by
the North American Spine Society (NASS).

Faculty member Henry Finn, MD
has completed the new development of the Oncologic Salvage
System (OSS), which evolved from the Finn Knee and is used
to reconstruct difficult cases involving lower extremity.

Faculty member Todd Wetzel, MD
was the proud recipient of the Henry A. Farfan Award from
the North American Spine Society (NASS).

Faculty member Christopher
Sullivan, MD assisted in the planning process for the new
The University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.

Faculty member Holly Benjamin,
MD was elected as a Fellow of the American College of
Sports Medicine. Dr. Benjamin also wrote the chapter “Volleyball
Injuries” appeared in The Female Athlete,
published by Williams and Wilkins.

Faculty member Craig Phillips,
MD was named as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Hand Surgery. Dr. Craig Phillips also served
on the faculty of the Annual Wrist Arthroscopy Course given by
the AAOS at its Orthopaedic Learning Center in March.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD received $75,000 research support from The Brinson
Foundation to investigate the pathogenesis of bone and soft
tissue sarcomas. Faculty members Dr. Michael A. Simon, MD,
Terrance Peabody, MD, and Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD
were Co-Investigators on this grant.

Faculty member Sherwin Ho, MD
has been awarded with the Young Investigator Grant
from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
(AOSSM). This two-year $40,000 Award will support Dr.
Ho’s research project entitled “Sox9-Based Gene Therapy in a
Rabbit Model of Articular Cartilage Injury”. This project will
be carried out in collaboration with faculty members T.-C.
He, MD, PhD and Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD.

Resident Hue H. Luu, MD
won the Best Basic Science Presentation Award at the 18th
Annual Smith & Nephew Resident Symposium.

The Section
has recruited two new faculty members, Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD
and David Manning, MD. Both Drs. Haydon and Manning were
residents at The University of Chicago Hospitals. After the
completion of one-year research fellowship in the Molecular
Oncology Laboratory, Dr. Haydon finished his orthopaedic
oncology fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Michael A.
Simon and Dr. Terrance Peabody. Dr. Haydon will join
the bone and soft tissue services, and directs the basic science
curriculum of our orthopaedic residency, as well as the
orthopaedic translational research. Dr. Manning completed a
Harvard fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the
Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Manning will establish a joint replacement
service and directs the resident recruitment of the Section.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD received a total of $150,000 research support from the
North American Spine Society (NASS) and the Aircast
Foundation to investigate the role of osteogenic BMPs in
bone regeneration and spinal fusion.

Resident Vishal Mehta, MD
has been awarded with the OREF Resident Research Grant.
This one-year $15,000 fund will support Dr. Mehta’s research
project. Faculty members Daniel Mass, MD and
T.-C.
He, MD, PhD are the mentor and collaborator on this project,
respectively.

Research Fellow Quan Kang, MD
was awarded with an International Postdoctoral Fellowship
from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (NCCAM) of the National Institutes of Health.
This five year award will support three years of postdoctoral
training at The University of Chicago and two years of research
activity at Dr. Kang’s home institute, Chongqing University of
Medical Sciences, after he returns to China. Faculty member
T.-C. He, MD, PhD will serve as the mentor for Dr. Kang
during his fellowship training at The University of Chicago.

Association Clinician Scientist Program.

Faculty member Frank M.
Phillips, MD received $50,000 research support from the North American Spine Society (NASS) to investigate the role
of Sox-9 in treating and preventing intervertebral disc
degeneration.

Orthopaedic resident Nikola
Nenadovich, MD presented his research findings at the Annual OREF Midwest Resident Research Conference and won the
First Place Prize.
