Faculty member Rex C. Haydon,
MD, PhD has been awarded with the K08 Career Development
Grant from NIAMS of the National Institutes of Health. His
project is entitled “BMP-6 mediated osteogenesis”. Dr. Haydon
will investigate the mechanisms behind BMP6-induced bone
formation.

Faculty member Daniel Mass, MD
was honored by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
with the Sumner L. Koch Award for his paper entitled “The
effect of ulnar shortening osteotomy on the ulnocarpal and
distal radioulnar ligaments”.

Faculty member Terrance
Peabody, MD was named to the Academic Issues Committee
of the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Peabody is
also a Specialty Site Reviewer for ACGME and an Oral Examiner for the
American Board of Orthopaedic
Surgery.

Faculty member David Manning,
MD, received the Block Award from The University of
Chicago. This one-year $20,000 Award will support Dr. Manning’s
research project entitled “Treatment of osteolysis with BMPs in
a murine model”.

MD was chosen by the residents as the recipient of the 2004 Laros Teaching Award.

Resident Jeffrey Luo, MD
was selected for the AAOS/OREF Clinician Scientist
Development Program, June 21-24, 2004 in Boston, MA.

The Section has recruited new
faculty member Michael Terry, MD as the third sports
medicine surgeon. Dr. Terry completed his orthopedic
training at Cornell’s Hospital for Special Surgery in New
York City. During his residency he received the Charles Neer
Award for research involving the rotator cuff from the
American Shoulder and Elbow Society. Dr. Terry comes to The
University of Chicago from the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in
Vail, Colorado where he has worked with the Denver Broncos,
the Colorado Rockies, and the United States Ski Team. His
special interests include shoulder, elbow, knee and hip
problems in athletes. Other areas of concentration include
joint preservation surgery of the shoulder and knee and
rotator cuff surgery.

Orthopaedic resident Michael
Sun, MD presented his research findings at the Annual OREF Midwest Resident Research Conference and won the
First Place Prize.

Faculty member Daniel Mass, MD
received the Ceithhaml Award for Alumni Volunteerism for
devoting his time and services in the medical community,
including serving as secretary to the Medical Staff Organization
of The University of Chicago Hospitals.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD received $100,000 research support from The Brinson
Foundation to investigate the pathogenesis of bone and soft
tissue sarcomas. Faculty members Dr. Michael A. Simon, MD,
Terrance Peabody, MD, and Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD
were Co-Investigators on this grant.

Faculty member Brian Toolan,
MD received a research grant from the American
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). This
one-year $10,000 grant will support Dr. Toolan’s research
project to investigate the effect of BMPs on Achilles tendon
healing in a rat model. This project will be carried out in
collaboration with faculty members T.-C. He, MD, PhD and
Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD.

Faculty member Rex C. Haydon,
MD, PhD received a $90,000 research grant from Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) to investigate
the potential augmentation of allograft bone with BMP-transduced
stem cells for posterior spinal fusion. Faculty member T.-C.
He, MD, PhD was a Co-Investigator on this grant.

Faculty member John Martell,
MD presented his research on a predictive model that
identifies total hip replacement patients who are at risk for
high wear and osteolysis at the Orthopaedic Research Society
Annual Meeting. Dr. Martell’s research findings have drawn
a worldwide attention.

Faculty member T.-C. He, MD,
PhD has been appointed by BSD to serve a three-year term on
The University of Chicago Institutional Biosafety
Committee (IBC).

has received the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF)
JBJS Resident Journal Club Grant.

Faculty member Bruce Reider,
MD began his term as President of the Herodicus
Society. Dr. Reider continues to serve as Editor of
the American Journal of Sports Medicine, an official
journal of American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
(AOSSM).

Faculty member Brian Toolan,
MD was selected to serve on the Electronic Media
Committee of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle
Society (AOFAS). His Committee oversees the
development and launch of AOFAS.org and FootCareMD.com.

Faculty member Purendu Gupta,
MD has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for his
expertise in spine-related topics.

Medical Student Jan Paul
Szatkowski was elected to membership in The University of
Chicago Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Jan was also selected as a recipient of the 2004-2005 Calvin
Fentress Research Fellowship Award under the guidance of his
research sponsor, T.-C. He, MD, PhD. Jan conducted
chondrogenesis research in Dr. T.-C. He lab, while Dr. Terrance
Peabody served as his clinical faculty mentor.
