  • Michael Simon, MD, Daniel Mass, MD, Bruce Reider, MD, Sherwin Ho, MD, Henry Finn, MD, and Michelle Gittler, MD are recognized as “Top Doctors” in the January 2008 issue of Chicago Magazine.  The University of Chicago is well represented in Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine because of their efforts.

  • Faculty member Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD has been inducted into the Pritzker's Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter by the 2007-2008 Pritzker members. Each year, the AOA class honors faculty, alumni, and housestaff members who have demonstrated excellence as physicians, displayed an eagerness, and modeled humanism in patient care. The members were also impressed with Dr. Haydon's ability to effectively balance his clinical duties with his successful research career.

  • Pritzker student Erwin Bennett was awarded with an one-year training grant from NIH/NCI's Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Program.  Erwin will study bone tumor metastasis under the direction of Faculty member T.-C. He, MD, PhD.

  • Faculty member Hue H. Luu, MD receives a five-year K08 Career Development Award from NIAMS/NIH to investigate the mechanism underlying osteogenic BMP9-induced mesenchymal stem cell differentiation.

  • Three Pritzker medical students who conducted research projects in the Orthopaedic research laboratory were among the 2007 Summer Research Program Award Winners.  Shanshan Mou and Michael Garland won the Overall Excellence in Scientific Quality, Content and Ability to Respond to Questions in the Performance of Research in Basic Science Award. Karl Balch won the top honor, the Joseph B. Kirsner Research Award for Excellence Award. Their summer research was under the mentorship of faculty members T.-C. He, MD, PhD, Russell Reid, MD, PhD (Plastic Surgery), Hue H. Luu, MD, and Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD.

  • Brian Toolan, MD has been named the Residency Program Director for Orthopaedic Surgery at The University of Chicago effective July 1, 2007. Dr. Toolan has been on the faculty of The University of Chicago since August of 1997.  He is nationally recognized for his education efforts in orthopaedic surgery, particularly in the treatment of foot and ankle injuries. Last year, Dr. Toolan was awarded the Dallas B. Phemister Award by the Mid-American Orthopaedic Association for the highest quality investigation presented at their annual meeting.  He also is a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.  Last year he gave numerous presentations at the American Foot and Ankle Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Mid-American Orthopaedic Association.  He also serves as the medical director of the University of Chicago Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center in Matteson.

  • Terrance Peabody, MD, the Simon and Kalt Families Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been named as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at The University of Chicago. Dr. Peabody is a highly regarded Orthopaedic Oncologist who occupies many leadership positions in medical education.  Dr. Peabody, who has served as Interim Chief since July 1, 2006,  Joined the faculty in 1994 as an Assistant Professor, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and to Professor in 2005. Dr. Peabody has been the Program Director for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and the Orthopaedic Oncology Fellowship.

  • Faculty member Rex C. Haydon, MD, PhD was chosen by the residents as the recipient of the 2007 Gerald S. Laros Teaching Award

  • Gerard Karsenty, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Genetics and Development of Columbia University Medical Center, delivered a lecture on "Cross-regulation of bone and energy metabolisms" on June 5th, 2007. The seminar was co-sponsored by the Center for Molecular and Regenerative Medicine and the Committee on Genetics.

  • PGY5 Resident Samer Attar, MD was chosen as the recipient of 2007 Resident Teaching Award by his peer PGY2s.

  • Best of luck! The Section said farewells to graduating Orthopaedic residents and fellows on June 2nd, 2007. The graduating residents are Samer Attar, MD (Adult Reconstruction at Mayo clinic, Phoenix, AZ), Seann Carr, MD (Adult Reconstruction at Scripps Institute), Neil Clerk, MD (Sports Medicine at Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic), and Jennifer Kummer, MD (Hand Surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery); and the graduating clinical fellows are Harpreet (Harry) Basran, MD (Sports/Ho), Devraj Benerjee, MD (Oncology/Peabody), Sergey Kachar, MD (Adult Reconstruction/Finn), and Jeffrey (Kevin) Smith, MD (Hand/Mass).

  • Pritzker medical student Katie A. Sharff won the Best Talk Prize in the Graduate Student category at this year's Charles Huggins Research Symposium on May 5, 2007. This award is the 4th honor Katie received for the past year, underscoring her outstanding performance during her one-year research tenure in the Molecular Oncology Laboratory.

  • Dr. Cecil Rorabeck, Professor and Chair, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Western Ontario, Canada, delivered the 13th Annual Gerald S. Laros Visiting Professor lecture, entitled "Alternative Bearings: Metal/Metal?", on April 13th. Dr. Cecil Rorabeck practices hip and knee reconstructive surgery at University Hospital. He has fellowship training from Toronto. He has served as the Orthopaedic Chair for ten years at Western and was the recent President of the COA. He has been awarded many awards for research, and has published extensively in several areas of orthopaedics.

  • Under the sponsorship of T.-C. He, MD, PhD, Pritzker medical students Katie A. Sharff and Emily E. Nuse were among the 11 nationwide recipients for the 2007 Medical Student Summer Orthopaedic Research Fellowship awarded by the Orthopaedic Research Society.

  • The Match was over, and here is our incoming class: Reginald Alexander (Howard University), Kyle Hazelwood (Loyola University), Thomas O’Hagan (New York Medical College), and Noah Shaftel (Ohio State University). Welcome aboard!

  • Faculty Hue H. Luu, MD was a recipient of the 2007 Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Research Grant. This grant will be for two years with total funding of $100,000. Dr. Luu proposed to study the role of S100A6 in human osteosarcoma.

  • Third year residents Suleman Hussain, MD  and Matthew Beal, MD won the 2007 OREF DuPuy Resident Research Grants. Both Drs. Hussain and Beal's research will be under the supervision of faculty member Rex C. Haydon, MD PhD.

  • Linheng Li, PhD, Associate Investigator of The Stowers Institute for Medical Research, Kansas CIty, MO delivered a lecture on "Stem cells and stem cell niches" on March 19th.  The seminar was co-sponsored by the Center for Molecular and Regenerative Medicine and the Committee on Molecular Medicine.

  • Under the sponsorship of T.-C. He, MD, PhD, Pritzker's third year medical student Katie A. Sharff was selected as a recipient of the 2007 AMA Foundation Seed Research Grant. Katie proposed to study the role of Hey-1 bHLH protein in BMP9 mediated osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells.

  • Terrance Peabody, MD, has been named as the Simon and Kalt Families Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery.  This is the first Chair endowed professorship for the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at The University of Chicago.
