Residency Application Information
The University of Chicago offers a five
year Orthopaedic Residency Program based at the University of
Chicago Medical Center. Entry into the program is by direct
match from medical school into one year of basic surgery and
four years of orthopaedic training.
The members of the orthopaedic faculty are
full time and maintain a one to-one working and teaching
relationship with the residents. Outpatient, inpatient and
surgical care are provided on a team basis with residents having
a major share of responsibility. Residents have degrees of
responsibility and participation in surgery commensurate with
their level of training and ability. The Chief Resident serves
as the team leader and the attending staff provides supervision.
First and second year residents share in-house responsibilities.
Patients enter the Hospitals through
direct physician referral, the emergency room or outpatient
clinics. Residents participate in pre admission work-up and
decision making and follow the patients in the outpatient
clinics after discharge. A wide variety of specialty clinics are
staffed by both residents and faculty. These specialty clinics
include orthopaedic oncology, pediatric orthopaedics, adult
spine, scoliosis, sports medicine, prosthetics, amputee,
foot/ankle, hand, trauma and arthritis.
Residents participate in approximately 50
hours of scheduled instruction per month in the form of lectures
and conferences. These include a daily x-ray review from the
emergency room, weekly Grand Rounds, Basic Science, Clinical
Conferences, Indications Conference, monthly Morbidity and
Mortality, and Journal Club Conferences.
Residents have a research rotation and are
required to complete at least one significant clinical or basic
research project during their residency. Time and funding are
also provided for residents to attend extramural courses
including the AO basic course, the OTA residents course,
orthopaedic pathology, and an AAOS meeting.
Our residency program provides
experience in research and teaching for residents interested
in maintaining an option for entry into academic orthopaedic
surgery. Our residency program provides experience in

biology of sarcomas and the structure of proteoglycan
aggregates. Clinical and basic research are integral to the
educational program.
